HOPI EAR CANDLING

HISTORY

Before organised religions Shamanic Cultures existed, these cultures had a vast wealth of healing techniques and knowledge that has been passed on over the centuries to be with us today. Shamanism can be traced back at least 50,000 years and their healing practices seen on cave pictures and other artefacts that have been found. Ear candling was practised by the Aztecs, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Native American cultures.  Hollow reeds would be coated with herbs and wax or clay cones impregnated with herbs would be inserted inside the ear and burnt, clearing out debris. The tradition to which the name HOPI derives from is Native American. The tribe of Hopi peoples have kept the healing ritual very much alive introducing the procedure to the people of the Western world.  The candle is in fact a hollow tube usually made from cotton, flax or hemp coated in bees wax.  The tube acts as a small chimney, the air inside gently heats up causing a subtle sucking action that will loosen ear wax; the whole ear will also receive a very gentle and soothing vibration massage. This action will also massage the nose, sinuses, throat and the upper respiratory tract.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

After a case history, all you, the client has to do is remove your shoes, and lay on the treatment couch on your side. If there are no contraindications to you receiving the treatment, your ear will be gently wiped with warm water and dried and the candle placed comfortably in your ear, and lit.  A soft bubbling, popping sound may be heard, as the candle burns.  We use Biosun candles that are of a high standard quality they are regularly checked independently and registered as a medical product. (Class 11a, 93/42/EEC)  These candles also have a fitted filter and cut off line for burning. A cover will also be placed around the ear for comfort and cleanliness. After the candle has been used again the ear will be gently wiped around the outside.  A facial massage will follow, once both ears have received the treatment.  Client’s often describe the treatment as soothing and giving the head a clearer lighter feeling, with clearer breathing and hearing, and also of being totally relaxed.  It is recommended that you do not wet the inside of the ears for 24 hours, through showering or hair washing or swimming.
